Recovery Is Possible: What Long-Term Support Looks Like
Recovery from human trafficking does not happen in a single moment. While leaving exploitation and reaching safety is a significant step, healing often continues long after. Survivors may be navigating the effects of trauma, disrupted relationships, financial instability, health concerns, and the challenge of rebuilding a life that was interrupted. Recovery is rarely a straight line, and every survivor's journey looks different.
At Covered, we see what can happen when a survivor has the time, safety, and consistent support to begin imagining what comes next. One survivor has been working toward greater independence while learning to trust herself and others again. Along the way, she has begun setting goals for her future and recognizing that her past does not have to determine her future. Her progress has not been defined by how quickly she heals, but by the steps she continues to take.
Long-term support means walking alongside survivors through those steps. It means creating space for healing while encouraging growth and independence, without placing a timeline on either. Sometimes progress is visible, and sometimes it happens quietly—through a new sense of confidence, a healthy relationship, or the realization that a different future is possible. Each step matters.
At Covered, we believe getting out of trafficking is only the beginning. Survivors deserve the opportunity to heal, discover their strengths, and build lives shaped by their own goals and choices. With continued support and meaningful opportunities, recovery is possible—and a survivor's story can become about so much more than what happened to her.
