Covered house

Here is where the survivor begins to take steps toward rebuilding their life. Survivors in the program will reside in Covered House, our long-term stabilization and comprehensive program. Self-sufficiency and goal-setting are the focus.

  • Continued Life Skills: Survivors will continue developing essential life skills through both core classes and optional electives tailored to their interests. These classes may include meal planning, time management, budgeting, emotional intelligence, computer basics, communication skills, problem-solving, internet safety, organization, and more.

  • Job Readiness: Survivors will participate in a 12-week program designed to prepare them for the workplace. Structured after Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, this program includes career coaching, resume writing, and training on workplace safety and workplace rights to ensure each survivor is equipped for long-term success.

  • Case Management: Case managers will continue to be in contact and support each survivor during this phase.

  • Identifying Information: Often traffickers control victims by taking their personal identification away. Our case manager will help survivors attain a birth certificate, Social Security card, ID card/Driver’s License, and sign up for the Address Confidentiality Program.

  • Name Changes: If needed, survivors may need to change their names for safety purposes. Our case managers will help them navigate this process.

  • Active Court Cases, Debt & Tickets/Fines: Case managers will work with each survivor to help them navigate through active court cases, paying tickets/fines, and managing debt/collectors. Often traffickers control victims by opening credit cards and buying houses in the victim’s names, so we must work with the courts to clear charges.

  • Medical Specialist, Dentist & Optometrist: Case managers will work with each survivor to set up appointments with a Dentist, Optometrist, Gynecologist, and other medical Specialists (as needed).

  • Counseling: Licensed clinical counselors will work with each survivor to help them process traumatic memories through EMDR therapy. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) focuses directly on the traumatic memory while incorporating the use of eye movements, allowing survivors to heal from their symptoms and emotional distress.

  • Financial Planning: Survivors will complete financial literacy training with case managers to work on budget planning, opening a bank account, understanding their credit score, and more.

  • Rental Planning: Survivors will work with case managers to find and apply for affordable housing and prepare to move into a home of their own.  Survivors will undergo training on rental agreements, rental insurance, and learning the importance of paying their rent on time.

  • Career Planning & Assessment: Case managers will help each survivor develop their future plan for a career based on their interests and skills.

  • Educational Goals: After developing a career goal, survivors will work with case managers to identify educational goals that will help them achieve success. This may be getting a GED, completing a certificate, going to trade school, or pursuing another form of higher education. Survivors will search and enroll in prospective schools/certification programs under the guidance of their case managers.

  • Introduce & Encourage a Healthy Community Outside of Covered: Case managers will help encourage each survivor to join healthy communities based on each survivor’s interest. This could be a church, social club, gym, volunteering opportunity, and more.
